  • ARC Raiders Rusted Gear: Where to Find It and How to Use It

What Is Rusted Gear Used For?

Rusted Gear is a Rare material that can be recycled into crafting components. Its main early use is upgrading the Gunsmith in your Workshop.

To upgrade from Gunsmith 2 to Gunsmith 3, you need:
    • 3x Rusted Gear
    • 5x Advanced Mechanical Components
    • 4x Sentinel Firing Core

That means you cannot ignore it if you want better weapon crafting options. Most players start actively farming Rusted Gear as soon as they unlock the next Gunsmith tier and realize how many runs it takes to find just a few.

    You can also:
    • Sell it for 2,000 Coins
    • Recycle it into 4 Metal Parts and 2 Mechanical Components
    • Salvage it into 12 Metal Parts

In most cases, it is better to keep it for upgrades. Selling is only reasonable if you already finished your Gunsmith upgrades and have a surplus.
    Where Does Rusted Gear Spawn?

Rusted Gear is tagged as an Industrial item. That is the key detail.

    It can spawn in:
    • Buses (rear trunks)
    • Car hoods
    • Car tool cabinets
    • Control panels
    • Metal crates
    • Mobile generators
    • Industrial drawers

In simple terms, if it looks mechanical or industrial, check it.

It does not usually spawn in basic civilian containers like kitchen cabinets or office desks. Focus your time on vehicle-heavy and industrial-heavy areas.
What Are the Best Maps and Zones for Rusted Gear?

You can technically find Rusted Gear on every map, but some zones are more consistent. Is The Blue Gate Good for Rusted Gear?

Yes. The Checkpoint and Warehouse zones in The Blue Gate are some of the most reliable spots.

    Why?
    • High density of cars and buses
    • Many industrial containers
    • Tight layout, so you can check multiple spawns quickly

The downside is heavy player traffic and strong ARC presence. You are rarely alone there. If you go in undergeared, expect to fight either bots or players, often both.

If you run this area, bring:
    • Adrenaline for fast disengage
    • Smoke Grenades for breaking line of sight
    • Zip Lines for quick repositioning

Speed matters more than firepower here. The longer you stay, the higher the chance another squad rotates in.
    What About Dam Battlegrounds?

    Good zones here include:
    • Scrap Yard
    • Hydroponic Dome
    • Power Generation Complexes
    • Water Treatment Control

Scrap Yard is especially strong because of container density. It is more spread out than The Blue Gate, so fights are less constant, but you still need to watch angles carefully.

I usually treat Dam as a medium-risk, medium-reward Rusted Gear farm. It is more forgiving if you want longer, slower runs.
    Is Spaceport Worth Farming?

    Yes, especially:
    • Rocket Assembly
    • Vehicle Maintenance

These areas are structured and container-heavy. The main challenge is verticality and choke points. If another squad sets up above you, extraction becomes difficult.

I recommend Spaceport if you know the map well and are comfortable rotating vertically.
    What About Buried City?

    Look at:
    • Parking Garage
    • Warehouse

Parking Garage is straightforward: cars everywhere. That means good Rusted Gear potential. But it is also predictable, so experienced players often sweep it early.

If you spawn nearby, rush it. If you spawn far, consider whether it is worth competing.
How Rare Is Rusted Gear in Practice?

Despite being labeled Rare, Rusted Gear feels closer to very rare in actual gameplay.

You can clear multiple industrial zones and find nothing. Other times you find two in one run. It is inconsistent.

This is why most experienced players:
    • Prioritize container density over map size
    • Leave early after finding one
    • Use Safe Pockets to secure it

Do not treat Rusted Gear like common scrap. If you find one, your run objective is basically complete.
Should You Use a Safe Pocket for Rusted Gear?

Yes. If you are specifically farming it, bring a non-free augment or no augment at all so you have a Safe Pocket.

Rusted Gear stacks up to 3 and weighs 3.0. It is not extremely heavy, but losing one after 20 minutes of looting feels bad.

A common mistake is getting greedy. Players find one gear, then push deeper for a second, and get knocked out. If you already secured one safely, extracting is often the smarter choice.
Should You Recycle or Salvage Rusted Gear?

Here is how it breaks down:

    Recycling gives:
    • 4 Metal Parts
    • 2 Mechanical Components

    Salvaging gives:
    • 12 Metal Parts

If you are short on Mechanical Components, recycling is better. If you only need bulk Metal Parts, salvaging gives more total metal.

However, in early and mid progression, you usually want to keep Rusted Gear for Gunsmith upgrades. Only break it down if you are sure you no longer need it.
Is It Worth Buying Instead of Farming?

Some players prefer to focus on combat or high-value loot runs and then look for cheap arc raiders items through trading markets or external platforms to save time.

    This depends on your playstyle.

If you enjoy scavenging and industrial runs, farming Rusted Gear is manageable. If you mainly play PvP-heavy routes or boss-focused runs, farming specific industrial materials can feel inefficient.

From experience, mixing both approaches works best: Farm when your spawn is close to good industrial zones. Otherwise, prioritize higher-value loot and let materials come naturally.
What Is the Most Efficient Way to Farm Rusted Gear?

Based on many runs, this approach works consistently:
    1. Choose a map with dense industrial zones (The Blue Gate or Dam).
    2. Spawn-check your distance to high-value areas.
    3. Move fast and ignore low-value containers.
    4. Secure Rusted Gear immediately in Safe Pocket.
    5. Extract early instead of chasing more.

Think in terms of runs per hour, not items per run. Two short, successful runs are better than one long run that ends in a knockout.
    Common Mistakes to Avoid
    • Looting everything instead of targeting industrial containers
    • Staying too long after finding one
    • Farming high-traffic zones without escape tools
    • Selling Rusted Gear early for quick Coins

Rusted Gear is progression-focused. Treat it as upgrade fuel, not vendor trash.

Rusted Gear is one of those items that quietly controls your early to mid-game progression. It is technically just a Rare industrial material, but it becomes a bottleneck when upgrading your Gunsmith.
